Cartridge Filter Cleaning
Cartridge filters are known for their high efficiency, effectively trapping small particles and offering superior water clarity. They operate at lower pressures, saving energy, and do not require backwashing, making maintenance easier. However, they come with a higher initial cost compared to sand filters and need regular cleaning, especially during heavy usage.
To clean them, turn off the pool pump, remove the cartridge, and rinse off debris using a garden hose. For deeper cleaning, soak the cartridge in a filter cleaner solution, then rinse and let it dry before replacing.
Sand Filter Cleaning
Sand filters are a cost-effective and durable option, with a longer lifespan than cartridge filters. They are low maintenance, with cleaning primarily involving a simple backwash procedure. However, they are less effective at filtering small particles and backwashing can consume a significant amount of water.
To clean a sand filter, reverse the water flow for backwashing, then set the filter to rinse mode to settle the sand and flush out remaining dirt. The sand should be checked regularly for clumping and replaced approximately every 5-7 years.
Diatomaceous Earth (DE) Filter Cleaning
DE filters offer superior filtration, filtering out the smallest particles for the clearest water. They are efficient in water usage for backwashing but are more expensive and labor-intensive to maintain.
Cleaning a DE filter involves backwashing, adding fresh DE powder through the skimmer, and periodically disassembling the filter to clean each grid. The DE should be replenished after each backwash and completely replaced at least once a year. Despite their higher maintenance, DE filters are excellent for those seeking the highest water clarity.
